
Judith has prepared supporting material for, and submitted numerous planning applications for landscape schemes on behalf of clients. She has also acted as expert landscape witness at a number of planning inquiries and appeals. Her particular expertise lies in the assessment of the implications of new development within heritage landscapes and relating to the settings of historic buildings and features.

A303 Stonehenge: highway improvements

Independent adviser (1999 – 2011) to the National Trust on the landscape and environmental implications of the Highways Agency’s proposals to widen the A303 trunk road crossing the Stonehenge World Heritage Site and place part of the road into a tunnel. Expert witness on behalf of the National Trust, at the Planning Inquiry of 2004.

Great Porthamel, Talgarth, Brecon

Research into the history of the landscape surrounding Great Porthamel, a late medieval fortified house situated on the fringes of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The house and its surviving gatehouse are now part of a working farm. The study, submitted as evidence to a successful planning appeal, examined the potential impacts of a proposed anaerobic digester plant on the setting of the listed buildings and within the wider National Park landscape.

Blackdown Park, Sussex

Blackdown House, in the South Downs National Park, enjoys panoramic views over the Lower Weald of West Sussex. However, its prominent position makes the house and its parkland visible from a wide range of viewpoints. A Landscape Character Assessment and Visual Impact Assessment examined the implications of building a number of new outbuildings and associated up-graded access.
